Pitt’s residential network, MyResNet, plays a vital role in supporting the digital needs of a vibrant student community. During the previous year, MyResNet was used by more than 8,500 students living in over 35 buildings across campus, with peak usage reaching as high as 23,500 active devices. This level of demand for connectivity, concentrated in area of roughly a quarter square mile, is remarkable. To put it into perspective, more than 60 boroughs in Allegheny County have populations smaller than the number of students in University-owned housing! The density of connections on MyResNet surpasses even what commercial wireless providers typically handle.
Next-Generation Connectivity: 5G and 6G Upgrades
In response to the growing demand for high-speed internet in residence halls, MyResNet offers cutting-edge 5G and Wi-Fi 6G connectivity. The network provides speeds of 140 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload per device, allowing students to enjoy seamless streaming, gaming, and online learning. You can connect to MyResNet-5G using your MyResNet Wi-Fi password, whereas connections to MyResNet-6G require that you first turn off Private Addresses and register your device. Additionally, MyResNet supports connectivity for up to 12 devices simultaneously, ensuring that all personal gadgets can stay connected without compromising speed or reliability.
Personal Area Network (PAN) for Smart Devices
Another exciting feature of MyResNet is the availability of a Personal Area Network (PAN), which facilitates better support for smart home devices. Students can easily connect devices like speakers, wireless printers, and smart light bulbs, creating a more integrated and convenient living environment. This enhancement reflects the University's commitment to providing a network experience that mirrors the best of residential connectivity.
PittNet: Supporting Academic and Administrative Needs
While MyResNet caters to residential needs, PittNet continues to serve academic and administrative functions across the campus. Recent upgrades have enhanced Wi-Fi coverage in key areas such as Lawrence Hall auditoriums and the Nationality Rooms, ensuring seamless connectivity for research, teaching, and university operations. Along with outdoor hotspots and Wi-Fi on campus shuttles, PittNet facilitates uninterrupted access to essential digital resources.
Monitoring and Support: Ensuring Seamless Service
Pitt Digital, along with our MyResNet vendor partner Boldyn Networks, monitor campus network service levels around the clock, tracking support calls to identify patterns that may indicate a broader issue. We conduct on-site service audits to measure Wi-Fi speed, signal strength, and sources of interference on a building-by-building basis. However, isolated connectivity issues can sometimes occur, and it's crucial to report any Wi-Fi problems to the Technology Help Desk immediately. Our team relies on these reports to identify and troubleshoot issues effectively, ensuring quick resolutions.
As we embrace these technological advancements, Pitt Digital remains committed to delivering exceptional services that enhance both academic and residential experiences. If you experience any connectivity issues, please contact the Technology Help Desk at 412-624-HELP (4357) to ensure a swift response.
